Through the remarkable leadership of Dr. Wanny Roa and her team in the Dominican Republic, and in memory of our mentor and original team builder, Dr. Ramon Murphy, this year has seen the continued growth of maternal-infant health education programs in the Caribbean.
Highlights of our work in 2023 include:
1. Implementation of 16 in-person maternal-infant health training programs in four different nursing schools and three municipal and regional hospitals in the Dominican Republic.
*4 Helping Babies Breathe training programs
*4 Essential Care for Every Baby trainings
*4 Combined Helping Babies Breathe/Essential Care for Every Baby trainings
*2 Bleeding After Birth training programs
*2 Preeclampsia/Eclampsia training programs
2. Training of more than 333 physicians, nurses, medical students, nursing students, EMTs, and community health workers. (We have now trained over 2,153 health care workers in the Dominican Republic since 2015!)
3. An emerging partnership with World Pediatric Project, a wonderful non-profit organization with the shared vision to improve the health of children in Latin America, will facilitate the sustainable growth of our training programs and our team in the Dominican Republic.
4. The founding MDR leadership team visited longtime regional partners, new partners and various training sites in the Dominican Republic with Dr. Roa and her team in May 2023. We celebrated eight years of collaboration, planned upcoming projects and research efforts, and witnessed the brilliant community growth that has been fostered in the halls of the nursing schools, medical campuses, and community health centers throughout the northern Cibao region of the country.
We were especially moved to hear from many young women who described the personal empowerment and professional opportunities that they discovered through their participation in MDR's maternal-infant health training programs with Dr. Roa.
On behalf of these community members and the Manos de Ramon team, thank you.
